catalog shooting

model on white background for catalog shoot

series of model on white background

Catalog shooting can get a little repetitious since you’re often shooting the same shot, same model, same lighting, different outfit, over and over for hours. But working with this model is totally different. She moves so naturally that every shot feels different and new during a shoot. We shot like 600 photos on a white background and not once did it feel repetitious.

Sorting out the photos from that shoot and it’s great to have so many options. Shoot five photos of this model and you end up with five keepers! Really makes my job a pleasure. Having an amazing team to work with is also a huge bonus.

red

redhead model by window

This shoot was so much fun. What makes a shoot fun? Well, I’ve worked with the model before and she’s great. My favorite MUA was doing hair/makeup. And I love the client too! Which may sound like I’m kissing up but it’s true. This was just all around a really fun shoot. A really pleasant pace too.

We mostly shot catalog style on white background but even that was fun. The model is just amazing in how she moves. So natural.

This was one of the final shots we did– it was getting dark and we were shooting by the window. I had to crank up the ISO to 2500 @ 2.2, 1/80. Which is pretty damn high if you’re an old guy who learned to shoot on film! Back in film days, ISO 800 or 1600 were considered pretty damn fast. I read a magazine article recently that high ISO capacity would be the real revolution in digital and I’m starting to believe that’s true. It was much darker in reality than it looks in this photo.

Well I had been hoping to run this as a side-scrolling gallery but couldn’t find any plug-in’s that I liked or that worked. It just has a better flow when the photos are large and you scroll them from left to right. But for now, I’m stuck posting old school style.

So these chairs were an unexpected bonus on this shoot. I had seen them on the sidewalk with a “free” sign and was inspired. I was going for more fun and candid shots, even though this is all obviously staged.

Anyway, if anyone knows how to do a side scroller gallery for wordpress, I’d love to hear from you!

re-thinking SEO

January 20th, 2012

screen grab of google results for portland photographer

“My name is Pete, and I’m an SEO-aholic.”

“Hi, Pete!”

Seriously, for a while I’ve been obsessed with SEO. Always sneaking keywords into everything I can – image alt tags, link descriptions, posting on social media at times most likely to get noticed, reviewing my google analytics with a fine-tooth comb, etc, etc.

And you know what? I’m not so convinced anymore that SEO matters as much as I thought. What changed?

Well I get at least one phone call a week from someone trying to sell me SEO services. They almost always start with something like, “You’re on page 2 of a google search for ‘portland photographers’”. And for a fee, the caller will get me on page one. The irony is that depending on your monitor size, I’m sometimes listed on page one (see image above) for “portland photographer”. Size does matter when it comes to SEO.

But you know what? I’m slowly coming around to the realization that SEO doesn’t really matter for commercial photographers. Clients rarely find a commercial photographer based on google results. Instead, they usually ask for recommendations from co-workers or work with someone they’ve already worked with.

We’ve all heard this a million times, but relationships are much more important than anything else. More important than where you rank on google, more important than having insane photography skills, more important than having shitloads of friends on FB. People usually hire people they know or people recommended by people they know.

Leslie Burns (a commercial photography consultant and attorney) has long recommended you spend your efforts on direct marketing and creating relationships rather than SEO. In fact, she goes so far as to say “Fuck SEO” in her December 29th blog post (#4 on the list). I have to say, after a lot of reflection, I think she has a valid point.

So if you’re obsessed with SEO, I’d suggest you re-think it. Your best clients aren’t going to come from google searches (some clients will, but generally, the best – ie ones hiring you for shoots you really want to do – probably aren’t using google to find you).

And finally, Michael Katz points out in his awesome business blog and webinars, that it’s a lot easier to get re-hired by existing clients than to try to find new clients. The key here is to take a genuine interest in your clients.

Think about it. You’re at the grocery store and the clerk asks, “How ya’ doing?” You might give them a single word answer and forget all about it. But what if they ask, “You going anywhere for the holidays?”

That happened to me last month and I had a conversation with the grocery store clerk (he was going to Texas, I was going to California) and every time since, when I go to that store, I now say “hi” to the clerk. Even when he’s not helping me. That’s something no amount of SEO can create.

way over thinking facebook likes

January 18th, 2012

two facebook screen captures

Check this out. Same exact photo posted on FB by me and the model. She has 684 friends, I have 568 fans. So she has 17-percent more audience than me. Yet check the likes. I received 9, she received 40. That’s 78-percent more likes for her post of the exact same photo!

I am convinced a girl posting the exact same content on FB will always receive more likes than a guy. Would make for an interesting study anyway.

Incidentally, this is by far my most popular photo on facebook and I didn’t even post it. Eighty-five likes! 85!

camera and sunglasses

Such a fun shoot! Here are two more sneak preview images. I’m slowly whittling down my selections. That’s often the most difficult part of a shoot for me. It’s tough sorting though a 1000 photos and pulling out a dozen that sort of tell a story or somehow relate to each other.

women’s coats

January 15th, 2012

two photos of model in coat

Little overwhelmed by the sheer volume of photos from this shoot! It’s going to be a lot of work narrowing everything down. Wow what a difference shooting natural light and having a complete crew (stylist, MUA/hair, assistant) can make in terms of how much it’s possible to shoot. I shot over a 1000 photos!

Anyway, for the photography enthusiasts out there, this is a great example of sun as direct light and backlight. Image on the left is direct light, image on right is backlight with a reflector. You’re going to need an assistant with a reflector.

women’s jackets

January 14th, 2012

Fantastic shoot today! I’ve been wanting to shoot women’s winter coats over dresses for a while now and finally had a great opportunity to pull it all together today. And — best of all, the weather was clear and occasionally sunny! January in Portland is not usually clear much less sunny. I thought we’d end up shooting with strobes under a bridge which is reality shooting outdoors most years in the real Portlandia in winter.

Anyways, there is SOOOOO much more from this shoot. This is just a quick preview.
