photos used on display in costco

Check this out — bunch of my photos on a display in Costco! Yay!

These were shot last year or maybe even in 2010. The model has since gone on to a crazy tour of Europe as a model!

Moontess photo shoot: rough cut

January 10th, 2012

Trying to compress a nine hour photo shoot into a three minute video is a tough task! This is a very rough cut. Ironically I was editing it for a while with no sound and then I heard “Comic Book Whore” by Jane Jensen on Pandora. It was exactly the pace and sound I wanted for this. Waiting to hear back if I can even use the music in the final cut. This version is rough and just for fun.

Oh and just to be clear, the model, Nicole, is not an actual comic book whore to my knowledge. I’m guessing that’s someone who is really, really into comic books.

Anyway, one more note. Editing video is a pain in the ass! I guess it probably gets better with time. But wow. Editing three minutes of video (even roughly) takes days!

sunny outdoor fashion

model posing outdoors on grass in the sun

Working on a behind the scenes video from a shoot this past summer. The video was just a personal project captured during a crazy day long shoot in a boutique on NW 23rd in Portland. Hot day, shooting indoors and out, and we shot a LOT (mostly stills)

So anyway, I’m editing the video and adding stills (stills in video? yeah, they’re kind of a pain because thanks to Ken Burns, you can’t really have static stills in video anymore, they have to move around and zoom in and out) and ran across this still that I thought was nice.

I never know how to write my headlines/subject lines for posts so pardon this generic one. The main thing I miss about working a 9-5 job is that I used to have multiple editors available to edit copy (I was a journalist)!

Anyway, here are some pics from a model portfolio shoot last week in southeast Portland. Trying to work more with a single light or natural light because it’s faster and tends to look better. The irony is we also shot a bunch of photos using multiple strobes on a white backdrop but none of those made the model’s final selection list.

swimwear model in gold bikini

Another swimwear photo of Ewa, this one shot at sunset in Miami. Worked solo on this one so the lighting is a bare reflector on a strobe (softboxes tend to catch the wind and blow over when I’m solo)

Игра вокруг с Google Translate и опробовать Россия в честь русского Ewa модели.

This girl is Russian but really she speaks great English so no need for translation. She really delivered in terms of swimwear photos too. And she’s a super nice girl too.

I know – I mention that a lot– models being nice. But the best models are almost always really nice too. Least in my experience. I can literally think of one girl I’ve shot who was a super bitch who still took great photos, all the rest were nice. I’m just lucky I guess.

redwoods road trip

January 2nd, 2012

camping with black lab in the rain

Couple more pics from my recent road trip to California. Dog and I camped in the redwoods in northern California on the way home. It was raining.

redwood trees in mist

There’s a fabulous dirt road from Crescent City to Hwy 199 called Hopland Hill Road. It winds through about ten miles of amazing redwood groves.

redwood trees along hopland road in california

This road is seriously one of the coolest roads I’ve ever driven. The trees are just massive and there’s a real feeling of vulnerability and smallness to be wandering among these giants that have been growing for hundreds of years.

car in the redwoods

And while there aren’t drive-thru trees on public land in the redwoods (least not that I’m aware of) the trees certainly are big enough to dwarf a SUV.

Speaking of SUV’s, here’s mine loaded up for a road trip. The dog (even though he’s barely six months old) is an angel in the car. He’s a normal puppy with everything else — tearing shit up, chewing anything he can — but amazingly, he is perfectly behaved in the car. He’s never even tried to get on the front seat!

close up of boots

Alright, while I’m giving shouts out, let me just say these LaCrosse boots have been one of the best pairs of shoes ever. These boots are about 20 years old and have been worn on almost every wet weather outdoor adventure I’ve had. They have rubber bottoms and leather uppers and they’re waterproof yet still comfortable and great to wear. I know a lot of people don’t like camping in the rain, but slip on a pair of these boots with your rain gear and you won’t even notice the rain!

cds on tape in car

And finally, I often listen to books on tape/CD when on road trips. Here are two that captured my attention. “China Road” is brilliant and will get you thinking about China in ways you cannot imagine. I learned SO MUCH from this book. I’ve long been a fan of Rob Gifford on NPR and this book really shows why he is such a brilliant reporter. Highly recommended by me!

I also listened to about half of “The Long Walk” (still listening ’cause it’s good!) on my road trip. Wow. I will try to never complain again about rustic travel! The book is a true life story about a Polish soldier captured by the Russians in WWII and sentenced to 25 years in a Siberian prison camp. Just getting to the camp ends up killing many prisoners. The author, however, escapes and walks from Siberia to “freedom” in Europe and rejoins the fight against Russia. Now this was in a day before LaCrosse boots so it’s a pretty amazing story.

Anyway, that concludes my posts about my recent California adventure. Future posts will get back to fashion, beauty, and swimwear photography!

lake shasta

lake shasta and trees on shoreline

Couple of snaps from a recent trip to California that included a night camping at Lake Shasta.

black lab puppy sitting near picnic table

Discovered this Lake Shasta campground last year on a trip to California and revisited recently. It’s truly one of the most stylist forest service campgrounds I’ve seen. Terra cotta patios and firepits and custom cement USFS picnic tables.

muddy lake shasta shores

It’s on the shores of Lake Shasta which sounds pretty cool but the reality is a whole lot of Lake Shasta looks like this from the shore — muddy and steep. With ring around the bathtub.

close-up of black dog outdoors

My dog kept wandering off and doing stupid stuff like eating poison mushrooms so he ended up getting tethered to the fire pit.

Took a couple of days over the Christmas holiday to drive to California to visit relatives. On the way home, drove up through the redwoods on Hwy 101 in northern California. Will post more on that trip soon — just got back last night! In the meantime, here’s a preview.

Happy Winter Solstice

December 22nd, 2011

old man winter

One of the best days of the year — it’s going to start getting light earlier and staying light later! Yay!

Always like to trot this photo out there for the winter solstice since it seems to really represent wintertime to me. Ironically, it was shot in April on a snow survey on Mt. Hood.
