Had a chance to shoot outdoors for the first time in a long time today. It’s been rainy with temps in the 40s for the last month. Used a scrim to diffuse the light on the model and shot this one natural light.
This shoot was technically a hair shoot for a local hair/makeup artist so we did shoot a bit indoors too. But my favorite shots always seem to be outdoors.

Originally was shooting video of the Hula Hoopla troupe. And to be honest, video really is the way to capture the motion and performance of this troupe. They wanted a group shot though so I did ended up shooting some stills and good thing — that group shot turned out really nice! (yes, I’m biased…)
Stay tuned for the video – I promise it’s worth the wait!

Well this is certainly a clever marketing tool. Got an email today from the US Commerce Association that I was the winner of the 2012 Best of Portland Award in the Swimwear category. Cool, right?
Clicked the link to claim my “customized award” and it’s only going to cost me $200 for the plaque and the crystal award. D’oh!
I wonder if they charge Oscar and Emmy winners for their awards? lol
I will give the Commerce Assn this though. They did a little bit of homework and instead of selling me a generic photography award, they at least picked a genre (swimwear) that I really do love to shoot. Now the question is what to wear on the red carpet? What? There’s no ceremony?

Headshots don’t have to be stiff and boring like a school portrait! They can be fun, they can be unique, they can be professional. A great headshot is often a combination of all three of these factors.
Check out my new Headshot Website and remember — for April only, get a free 8×10 print with every look!

After a number of recent requests for headshots, I’ve decided to launch a website dedicated to headshots and portraits. While a lot of the photos on the website aren’t technically headshots (many show more than just the head), I wanted to show them as options. A lot of people want a decent headshot along with some other fun photos during a photo shoot session. These headshot sessions are the answer to those needs!
Best of all, any headshot session booked in April will include a free 8×10 print for each look! So if you book a session with four looks, that’s four free 8×10 prints! Offer only good for shoots booked this month so contact me today to schedule your shoot!

Sample of some the photos finished up this weekend as part of a model portfolio shoot. We shot a huge variety of photos for this shoot ranging from fitness to lifestyle to swimwear.
When you hire me for a shoot, you don’t just get an assembly line shoot. You get a customized shoot tailored to your needs, the weather, and whatever we can shoot fast and efficiently so you end up with a variety of photos to choose from. For example, it was sunny outdoors on the day of the shoot in these photos, so we ended up outdoors to take advantage of the clear weather.

Quick look at the back end of my latest website endeavor. Turns out a lot of my “headshots” aren’t technically headshots but they also don’t totally fit in on my commercial website. So I’m sort of developing my own version of a headshot and often that includes a 3/4 length shot.
This process of finding headshot examples for the website has involved looking back at just about every shoot I’ve done since June 2009. That’s been pretty intense. I’ve shot some decent photos but also some pretty gawd awful ones too! All part of growing creatively I suppose.

There’s this place called Jimbo’s just south of Miami on Virginia Key. Jimbo’s is closing for good after an unusual half-century in business.
What makes Jimbo’s so usual? Let’s start with the fact that it’s basically a squatters camp according to the Miami Herald:
“Jimbo’s has no lease on the public land, and no valid operating licenses, and exists only because of an apparent handshake deal sometime in the ‘50s, no member of the family has any legal claim on the site.”
Sounds like an Occupy camp. One that has existed for the last 50 years!
I visited Jimbo’s last year as part of a photography workshop. Even in the morning, there were guys hanging out drinking beer. Buildings were falling apart and covered in graffiti. There was a raccoon/possum (po-coon?) roaming around. Yet tourists stream in daily. It’s not particularly pretty but it sure is popular. And the fact that it has existed on public land with no permits, permission, or anything officially sanctioned by the city at all — for the last 50 years — is astonishing.
It’s unlikely Miami will ever see a place like Jimbo’s in the future. That’s probably a good thing. Yet still — there’s something about Jimbo’s that was so optimistic. It’s a symbol of the time when you could simply show up in south Florida and grab a beer and just hang out for good without having a place to live or even a job.
Anyway, I’m glad to have had a chance to visit Jimbo’s before it closed. Places like that are unique in this country and an interesting glimpse into what seemed like a simpler era.

Model from a commercial shoot requested this shot for a senior yearbook project. The original is on top but I started thinking it would look better cropped.
What do you think? Crop or no?
