This girl has the most amazing, translucent eyes. They remind me of the eyes of that girl photographed in Pakistan by Steve McCurry published on the cover of National Geographic.

Prepping for a shoot tomorrow and reviewing my work from a beach shoot earlier this year. Ran across these two photos– they’re sort of beauty swimwear hybrid photos.

Photo on the left is “lit” with a scrim– on the right is a softbox. I like the light from the scrim more in this series. One reason I like to review past work. It’s a great way to learn which techniques worked and why!

Couple of recent model headshots/beauty photos. I was trying out a technique new to me– mixing ambient window light with a strobe modified by a beauty dish. I really like the softness of the light produced with this technique and will definitely experiment more with it in the future. After all– photography is all about the light!

I’ve been photographing a lot of dark haired, beautiful models lately. And this model was no exception! She needed photos to start a model portfolio. I’ve found local modeling agencies tend to like a softer, more natural look, so that’s how we began this particular photo session.

Beauty photos are some of my favorites to shoot. And it’s always fun to run across a photo previously overlooked in the rush to get a photography job out the door. This one was from a fashion shoot for local boutique Moxie. I mentioned this in a previous post, but I love the eyes on this model. And they’re completely natural– no photoshop needed to bring ‘em out!

Model Kristina. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name of the makeup artist for this shoot (it’s from a couple of years ago). But if you want credit and you’re out there reading this– comment and I’ll add your name!

These are some of the prettiest blue eyes I’ve ever photographed. They have a gorgeous, big innocent Welch look.

Two different styles of lighting in these photos here, obviously. A ring flash on the left and an octa on the right. Surprisingly to me, the octa seems to do a better job of bringing out the intensity of her eyes. RF’s usually make photos “pop” so that was unexpected. I probably should have raised the octa a bit higher but it’s still a nice photo.

There’s a LOT of work that goes on behind the scenes of beauty and fashion photos. One of those key tasks is makeup. A great MUA will keep the model looking fresh and elegant without going over-the-top.

This isn’t often mentioned, but MUA’s are also key to helping a model remain relaxed and confident. After all, they’re working with the model before any shooting begins which can help set the mood of a shoot. A MUA is often one of the most crucial people at a beauty/fashion shoot since they work so closely with the model.

The photo on the left features MUA extraordinaire Jessica Belknap at work on model Caity. Jessica does some of the best natural, elegant makeup I’ve ever seen and is a delight to work with. She’s available for weddings, photo shoots, senior portraits, etc and comes highly recommended!

When I shot this photo, the studio was full of people — a dozen or so — it was noisy with music playing and models changing and all kinds of activity going on. Plus there was the occasional freight train going by outside (the studio is in an industrial area). The model in this pic is an absolute pro though– she is completely unfazed by what’s going on around her. Truly an amazing girl to work with.

Beauty photograph from yesterday.

Lighting is an octabox with two softboxes on the background and a gridded strip dome as rim light (which you can’t really see in this photo).

P.S. still working on my html and css skills. In terms of web design, I’m looking for ways to be able to post a single portrait format image on this blog without the massive white space on the right. Filling in that space with text is an obvious solution — hence all the notes on this image!

Eventually, though, I’d like to figure out a way to fill that space with images using CSS… still figuring that out though!
