Reworking some images from last fall. I previously posted the one on the left but not the beauty photo on the right. But it seemed to work well here too. Model is Shelby.

“new” beauty photosWednesday, June 2nd, 2010
Couple of beauty photos shot last fall. Yup, still digging through older work looking for cool photos that I never retouched or posted. There are many more from this shoot– it’s pretty tough to take a bad photo of this particular model. She definitely ranks in the top five best models I’ve photographed!

So I know HD DSLR cinema style video is all the rage right now.
But I think the ability of shooting stills in portrait format holds a cool advantage over HD video. And yeah, I realize the irony of a post like this on a blog set-up to display landscape format pics (hence the big white space until I get around to coding the text into that space — ain’t gonna happen tonight though).
Here’s the deal. Movie/video/cinema cameras shoot landscape (horizontal) format. That’s because t.v. and movie screens are set up to display horizontal images. With still photos, there’s the option of creating both portrait (vertical) format or landscape format.
Magazine covers and posters use portrait format. It enables the capture of an entirely different composition and image than shooting in landscape format.
Why does this matter? Because the orientation of a photo affects the viewer perception of that photo. It affects how your eyes scan the photo. In a way, portrait format puts blinders on a viewer and forces them to concentrate on the subject.
Ironically, the replacement of print magazines– ipad etc– has the ability to display landscape or portrait format easily.
I suppose the day will come when all cameras are so high res you can crop anything to a portrait format, but it’s still better (for now) to shoot it right in camera. Well at least until we can all afford 100 MP Hasselblad digital backs!
What’s my point? It’s best for now to vary between landscape and portrait as you shoot but try to understand why you chose one or the other. Do you want to show the surroundings? Do you need a wide shot or one that shows off the top of a swimsuit (like the above image)? I could have shot it landscape but there was a basalt black rock jetty over her left shoulder that I didn’t want attracting the viewer’s eye. Think about things like that as you shoot and decide how to hold your camera. It will dramatically improve your photos!

Surprise, surprise. Today’s post features another photo of a pretty girl! Just wanted to point out the pose– it works well with just about anyone. It’s sexy yet playful and seems to work best when shot a long lens fairly wide open (f/4 or wider).
Also, I added a bit more warmth to the model’s skin tones. What do you think? Do you like the warmer tones or the cooler tones on the previous posts?

This photo is the second to last shot during today’s shoot and one of my favs from a shoot packed with great images.
Moontess by Mihaela Munteanu gets credit for designing the lingerie. She is a really fantastic designer. Seriously nice work and I guarantee the lingerie and swimwear world will be hearing more from her soon.
Model Adriana (who did an awesome job considering this was her first modeling gig), hair/mua Jessica Belknap (loved, loved, loved the hair!), and assistant Yasmin Khajavi (your energy is awesome) were also key to this shoot.

I’ve been meaning to post these photos for a while. Shots of daisies from a camping trip this past summer. Something tonight had me remembering that trip. And rather than get actual work done, I decided to post some daisy photos.

Check out the light in the new studio. This studio is fabulous. I’m so excited to be shooting there!

Plan B was to shoot simple beauty shots. Photo on the left was shot just inside a garage with a reflector for fill. Photo on the right was shot in front of a white wall with a couple strip domes to lighten up the wall. Nothing fancy but still some nice images considering it wasn’t at all what we intended to shoot that day.
It’s always good to have a Plan B for shoots (and in life). Sometimes it rains, sometimes it doesn’t. When you do a lot of location shooting like I do, a backup plan can make the difference between sitting in bar while it rains or actually shooting some decent pics– then going to the bar!

At times I wish I wasn’t so right brained! Started in on an edit the model requested from this shoot, instead saw this one, and cranked it out with minimal retouching other than converting to B&W. I’m drawn to this image because there seems to be a lot of underlying emotion in it. What do you think?
