portland model in front of window posing for photo

This photo is from a really fun shoot with one of my favorite models ever. This girl is amazing. Fun to work with and she’s really nice. There is video from this shoot coming too — I promise! I’ve edited about 45 seconds of what will probably be a 2 minute or so video. Video editing takes forever!

green color cast solved

model in green field with green color cast

Loved this photo when I shot it but despite my best efforts at correct white balance (top photo), there was still a green color cast on her skin tones. And a couple of other issues too.

I used individual RGB values on a curves adjustment layer to get rid of the color cast (lower photo). Then added an overlay layer and painted white and black on her eyes, plus some sharpening, to make them stand out more.

model headshot outdoors

So this isn’t originally the photo I was going to work on tonight but it caught my eye during editing. It’s probably not even the best of the shots from this location but I like the mood here. The model is kneeling on a sidewalk to get that cool background behind her. And the MUA is holding a scrim to diffuse the sun on her! It was sort of a grab shot at the end of another series involving a bicycle.

I tried out a bunch of new retouching techniques (some successful, some not) on it. I have nothing but admiration for the pro-retouchers who retouch pore-by-pore on files! That is very tough to do and I definitely don’t have the patience for that.

beauty style shot of model posing outdoors in field

Great shoot today — both in the studio and outdoors! My favorite work almost always is shot outdoors and today was no exception. The crazy thing is it was about 65 F and sunny and I was totally sweating and hot! Guess I’m more used to the mid-40’s temps we’ve been having lately in Portland than I realized ’cause today felt downright tropical.

model drinking glass of water with blue straw

On a recent shoot, nine times out of ten, this model gave me the best photo on the first shot of each look. I could shoot 20 more frames and none of them would be as nice as that first shot. This happened over and over.

Anyway, this photo was a silly concept inspired by a Vogue photo in the amazing Vogue Model book. I highly recommend that book. So many great photos and models in it — inspiration galore for sure!

beauty photo of model in front of windows

Trying to learn some new retouching techniques from Carrie Beane’s book “Real Retouching: A Professional Step-by-Step Guide” but quickly got lost and reverted back to my usual techniques. She has a great process and I’ve already learned quite a bit — just don’t want to spend eight hours retouching a single image pore by pore!

window beauty shot of model in red

Cool idea here that I stumbled upon — I hung sheer red fabric off a light stand behind the model and in front of the window. It gives the background a nice red tint with no gels or strobes required.

BTW: this shoot was amazing. I am soooo happy with the photos! And I shot video. So stay tuned!

natural outdoor beauty photos of blonde model

Shot these photos while walking back from the beach after this particular shoot. Keep in mind at this point the model had been rolling around in the sand and jumping in the ocean with wet hair and all that during sunrise which can be tough if you’re not a morning person.

Obviously the photo on the left is heavily retouched but I’m not sure if I pulled it off to be honest. Luckily, I like the one on the right more anyway.

Couple more photos of Valentina. Those creamy skin tones are not from post-processing/retouching. They’re from Canon’s absolutely amazing 85mm lens. It is absolutely my favorite lens at the moment because it produces such nice bokeh and skin tones.

These are barely retouched photos! (basically sharpened the eyes just a touch ’cause they were slightly out of focus) Valentina is amazing. This was my second time working with her and we only had an hour. But we still nailed some really cool photos!
