I shoot product photos too. These kind of photos are perfect for web sales, detail shots for catalogs, or anything else where you need a clean, simple shot of your product. In this case, it’s bamboo wraps (yes, the wraps are made of bamboo!) from Naturally Knotty. The wraps come in really cool bamboo tubes.
There are many, many ways to shoot products. For this shoot, that first photo has four strobes — two strip domes providing a rim light, a softbox for key light, and a bare reflector on the background. As you can see in the second shot, the background is just white posterboard. The last two shots were done with the modeling lamps cranked all the way up and the white balance set for tungsten so I could shoot at a wide open aperture.

Well this is bizarre. I just ran across this photo splashed all over a blog for a calendar shoot. Problem is, this photo was from a shoot I did for a different client and has NOTHING to do with the calendar. The makeup artist who took the photo didn’t give them permission to use the photo either.
It looks to me like they’re using it to pretend it’s a behind-the-scenes photo from their calendar shoot — which it is not! I have NO AFFILIATION with this calendar or the people producing it. No one in this photo went to OSU, the makeup artist who shot it didn’t go to OSU either. It’s from a photo shoot for a Portland designer last year and has nothing to do with that calendar.
I’ve filed a DMCA complaint form with google (the blog host) and sent an email asking the blog admin to remove it.

Couple of behind-the-scenes snaps from a indie film production in north Portland. It’s called The Buskers and Lou Movie and there’s more pics on the link. The director is Alex Cassun.
It’s really fascinating for me to see the shift to amazing cinematic quality digital files from so many DSLR’s. You can now throw together a crew and a story and create a beautiful looking film! And the irony of referring to digital as film is definitely not lost on me. I’ve been a pro photographer long enough to remember the film vs. digital argument. I think we all know who won that one.

Loved this photo when I shot it but despite my best efforts at correct white balance (top photo), there was still a green color cast on her skin tones. And a couple of other issues too.
I used individual RGB values on a curves adjustment layer to get rid of the color cast (lower photo). Then added an overlay layer and painted white and black on her eyes, plus some sharpening, to make them stand out more.

Spent a day shooting something completely new for me — behind-the-scenes video and stills for an indie movie production in north Portland. The Buskers and Lou Movie is a very low budget production and has been interesting to see the innovative DIY gear like shoulder rigs for DSLR’s and how everything is put together.
A lot of the movie is being shot on the street in quick takes. I mostly shot video but since production continues today, haven’t had a chance to put any of that together yet (editing video is much, much more time intensive than stills).

Lil’ behind-the-scenes look at how the photo on the right was shot. Used a bare reflector (it was too windy for a softbox or big modifier) on a strobe light. I shot from low so only the sky appeared behind the model.

New behind-the-scenes video of a photo shoot and the final results. Make sure to check out the digital catalog at the end of the video. Graphic design meets photography meets video!
Learned a bit about Premiere Pro to edit this one (my last video was edited in iMovie which is easier to learn but doesn’t have nearly the options or features of Premiere Pro). Still have tons to learn about both shooting and editing video but with each project I’m getting better!

Behind the scenes shot of yours truly workin’ it at a Supershoots photography workshop. Regular blog readers have seen the bottom photo before. Just wanted to re-share it here to illustrate the set-up and final result (shot from a different angle and pose than the BTS set-up, of course).

Couple of swimwear photos shot today out at Skamania Lodge. I was shooting from a ladder outside the indoor pool to get the angle needed by the client. Behind-the-scenes photo by Thomas Lindsay.
And you know what? I’m still waiting for the day a model tells me the key to killer abs is to drink lots of beer! Unfortunately no model has ever told me that. This model says yoga and working out is key. Hmmmm… not the answer I wanted to hear.

My first ever attempt at shooting and editing a video! Yeah, it’s a little shaky and out of focus at times and there are some rough transitions and the “ken burns effect” on the still photos ain’t that great but that’s a limitation of the software (imovie). Still, I’m pretty excited for my first attempt.
It’s no Sundance winner. But I do want to give a huge thanks to makeup artist and hair stylist Jessica Belknap. She had no idea I was going to shoot a whole video of her working until I started shooting it. Thanks for being such a great sport, Jessica!
