getting video onto an iPad

ipad video photo

Today I literally spent hours trying to get a short (1:47 trt) video onto my iPad. I’ve been using Portfolio for iPad but when it was updated at the end of February, I’ve had serious issues playing video. It crashes the whole app – not very impressive when you’re trying to impress a potential client.

I’ve been looking for other ways to play video off-line and decided the apple app included with the ipad would work fine. But getting video to work on an iPad isn’t as simple as getting it to play on a mac or pc.

After several attempts with itunes and dropbox (which took an HOUR for a less than 2 minute video) only to have the iPad basically say, “I can’t play that file”

Now keep in mind one of those files is already on the iPad and has played successfully dozens of times in that portfolio app that no longer works properly.

After a lot of trial and error, here’s what I came up with.

iPad (version 1) seems to like these video settings best:

  • .mov file
  • codec H.264
  • 1280×720 size
  • 30fps
  • 2500kbps bitrate
  • audio codec AAC
  • 48khz
  • 160kbps
  • stereo
  •

Hopefully this will save someone the hours of frustration I just went through figuring this out!

black lab goes to the beach

    Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Couple of notes about this video. First off, a friend a photo of my young dog Bridger (he’s eight and half months old in this video) on Facebook. My dog had a collar on that was huge. It was from my previous dog. My friend Tina Stinnett felt bad for Bridger, so she bought him a new collar. Thanks Tina!

I promised to send her photos and the photos ended up turning into an entire video. Which is cool because this was Bridger’s first trip to this particular beach (my favorite beach in Oregon). It was also the beach where I shot about 30 seconds of video of my previous dog which turned out to be the only video I have of that dog. So this time I wanted to make sure to do it right. ‘Cause the video will definitely outlive the dog!

Anyway, this was made just for fun so enjoy!

Short behind-the-scenes video about photographing wraps and scarves in studio on a dress form.

Photos are a great way to help you sell more on the web. Whether it’s clothing or sunglasses or any other product, people want to see what they’re going to buy, before they buy it.

I can help you get the best photos for websites, ebay, amazon, etc. Contact me for details.

    Moontess photo shoot: rough cut

    Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

Trying to compress a nine hour photo shoot into a three minute video is a tough task! This is a very rough cut. Ironically I was editing it for a while with no sound and then I heard “Comic Book Whore” by Jane Jensen on Pandora. It was exactly the pace and sound I wanted for this. Waiting to hear back if I can even use the music in the final cut. This version is rough and just for fun.

Oh and just to be clear, the model, Nicole, is not an actual comic book whore to my knowledge. I’m guessing that’s someone who is really, really into comic books.

Anyway, one more note. Editing video is a pain in the ass! I guess it probably gets better with time. But wow. Editing three minutes of video (even roughly) takes days!

    Noisy Studio

    Sunday, August 7th, 2011

Noisiest day ever outside the studio recently. Couldn’t resist putting together a short video. Hey, had to keep my hands busy so I wouldn’t pull my hair out. And just when the jackhammer was done, a guy pulled out a chainsaw! It was not exactly a day for quiet contemplation.

podcast interview on starting out with DSLR video

    Monday, June 27th, 2011

There’s a great podcast interview with Florida photographer Pascal Depuhl on New Media Photographer right now. The interview starts around 14:00 minutes into the podcast, though the rest of the show is interesting too.

The Depuhl interview is about the business transition from still to video shooter. It touches on a whole lot of issues that have us still shooters scratching our heads when it comes to video. Labor issues, rights issues, that kind of thing. It’s well worth a listen. Put it on your phone and go for a walk or listen on a drive. I promise you’ll get a couple of laughs out of it too — especially if you’re starting to shoot video. Depuhl says just about a hundred percent of his still clients are interested in video and that’s been my experience as well.

I think a lot of us will always be still shooters at heart. It’s definitely my absolute favorite medium. Stuck on a desert island, I’ll take ten years of Vogue over ten years of video any day. But I suspect the masses would select video.

portland actor in van during movie production

Shot this photo last week during an indie dslr film production in Portland. It was shot a van during the production of The Buskers and Lou Movie. Chatting with Marshall Walker Lee, the actor in the photo, I learned he had hiked the Pacific Crest Trail last year. Hiking that trail has long been a dream of mine. I’ve backpacked portions of the PCT and loved every bit of it.

Anyway, Marshall told me a story about eating a PCT breakfast of two snickers bars smeared with peanut butter and sandwiched between two poptarts! Marshall says it’s a challenge finding healthy food to make up for the 6000 calories a day generally burned by thru-hikers on the trail.

DSLR film production behind the scenes

small dslr film crew in north portland

Couple of behind-the-scenes snaps from a indie film production in north Portland. It’s called The Buskers and Lou Movie and there’s more pics on the link. The director is Alex Cassun.

It’s really fascinating for me to see the shift to amazing cinematic quality digital files from so many DSLR’s. You can now throw together a crew and a story and create a beautiful looking film! And the irony of referring to digital as film is definitely not lost on me. I’ve been a pro photographer long enough to remember the film vs. digital argument. I think we all know who won that one.

    fashion video

    Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Been working on this fashion video for a while now. They’re fun to shoot, not so fun to edit! I’m slowly getting better with both shooting and the editing/production. Someday soon I’ll be brave enough to record and use audio in one of my videos!
