Screengrab from a Naturally Knotty advertisement currently on Facebook (complete with FB’s infamous file compression). I shot the photo of the model.

Here are a couple of images to illustrate why it’s important for photographers to troll through old work. I was looking at work from last summer and ran across these fashion and swimwear photos. It’s common to find gems in old photography work and assignments so give it a try. If nothing else, you can gage how far you’ve progressed over time. It’s definitely enlightening.

time to put the umbrella away?Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010
The sun is out in Portland and it’s actually warmer than 60F today! Could it be? We might actually get a summer this year? Time to put away the umbrella?
Okay, to be fair, like most native Oregonians, I rarely use an umbrella. Even though we get fairly abundant rain here (have I mentioned four inches of rain has fallen so far JUST THIS MONTH?!?) Nearly five inches fell in May.
And it’s not like I don’t go outdoors when it rains. My black lab is fairly water resistant and he likes to walk — a lot! Even still, I’m more likely to grab a rain jacket and pop the hood up than I am to grab an umbrella. Not sure why that is but most native-Portlanders do the same.
Anyway, if it seems like I’ve been bitching about the weather this spring, it’s because I have. It’s been brutally wet and far colder than normal. But today– the sun is out and there’s blue sky. Definitely cause for celebration in these parts!
Model Kristina, jacket from Moxie boutique, umbrella probably from someplace like southern California where they actually use umbrellas when it rains!

p.s. I’m trying something new and today’s post was formatted using html rather than css. The layout works fine in FF and Safari and IE — but if you’re using a browser like Opera or Konqueror or Seamonkey and you notice something odd with the layout, would you mind leaving a comment so I can fix it? There’s a LOT of work that goes on behind the scenes of beauty and fashion photos. One of those key tasks is makeup. A great MUA will keep the model looking fresh and elegant without going over-the-top.
This isn’t often mentioned, but MUA’s are also key to helping a model remain relaxed and confident. After all, they’re working with the model before any shooting begins which can help set the mood of a shoot. A MUA is often one of the most crucial people at a beauty/fashion shoot since they work so closely with the model.
The photo on the left features MUA extraordinaire Jessica Belknap at work on model Caity. Jessica does some of the best natural, elegant makeup I’ve ever seen and is a delight to work with. She’s available for weddings, photo shoots, senior portraits, etc and comes highly recommended!

When I shot this photo, the studio was full of people — a dozen or so — it was noisy with music playing and models changing and all kinds of activity going on. Plus there was the occasional freight train going by outside (the studio is in an industrial area). The model in this pic is an absolute pro though– she is completely unfazed by what’s going on around her. Truly an amazing girl to work with.

I’ve been shooting a lot more natural light photos lately. Must be a reflection of the long days. Officially, it’s almost summer but here in western Oregon, it continues to rain almost daily. Four inches in June alone and the month is only half over!
