Meanwhile, back to the real world of working with actual models. Issac is a Portland guy who was signed by a Paris modeling agency and will be walking the runways of Paris Fashion Week this year. How cool is that?
I had a chance to work with him recently for a couple of hours and he definitely impressed me. Paris will love him.

Catalog shooting can get a little repetitious since you’re often shooting the same shot, same model, same lighting, different outfit, over and over for hours. But working with this model is totally different. She moves so naturally that every shot feels different and new during a shoot. We shot like 600 photos on a white background and not once did it feel repetitious.
Sorting out the photos from that shoot and it’s great to have so many options. Shoot five photos of this model and you end up with five keepers! Really makes my job a pleasure. Having an amazing team to work with is also a huge bonus.

This shoot was so much fun. What makes a shoot fun? Well, I’ve worked with the model before and she’s great. My favorite MUA was doing hair/makeup. And I love the client too! Which may sound like I’m kissing up but it’s true. This was just all around a really fun shoot. A really pleasant pace too.
We mostly shot catalog style on white background but even that was fun. The model is just amazing in how she moves. So natural.
This was one of the final shots we did– it was getting dark and we were shooting by the window. I had to crank up the ISO to 2500 @ 2.2, 1/80. Which is pretty damn high if you’re an old guy who learned to shoot on film! Back in film days, ISO 800 or 1600 were considered pretty damn fast. I read a magazine article recently that high ISO capacity would be the real revolution in digital and I’m starting to believe that’s true. It was much darker in reality than it looks in this photo.

Well I had been hoping to run this as a side-scrolling gallery but couldn’t find any plug-in’s that I liked or that worked. It just has a better flow when the photos are large and you scroll them from left to right. But for now, I’m stuck posting old school style.
So these chairs were an unexpected bonus on this shoot. I had seen them on the sidewalk with a “free” sign and was inspired. I was going for more fun and candid shots, even though this is all obviously staged.
Anyway, if anyone knows how to do a side scroller gallery for wordpress, I’d love to hear from you!

Such a fun shoot! Here are two more sneak preview images. I’m slowly whittling down my selections. That’s often the most difficult part of a shoot for me. It’s tough sorting though a 1000 photos and pulling out a dozen that sort of tell a story or somehow relate to each other.

Little overwhelmed by the sheer volume of photos from this shoot! It’s going to be a lot of work narrowing everything down. Wow what a difference shooting natural light and having a complete crew (stylist, MUA/hair, assistant) can make in terms of how much it’s possible to shoot. I shot over a 1000 photos!
Anyway, for the photography enthusiasts out there, this is a great example of sun as direct light and backlight. Image on the left is direct light, image on right is backlight with a reflector. You’re going to need an assistant with a reflector.

Fantastic shoot today! I’ve been wanting to shoot women’s winter coats over dresses for a while now and finally had a great opportunity to pull it all together today. And — best of all, the weather was clear and occasionally sunny! January in Portland is not usually clear much less sunny. I thought we’d end up shooting with strobes under a bridge which is reality shooting outdoors most years in the real Portlandia in winter.
Anyways, there is SOOOOO much more from this shoot. This is just a quick preview.

Check this out — bunch of my photos on a display in Costco! Yay!
These were shot last year or maybe even in 2010. The model has since gone on to a crazy tour of Europe as a model!

Trying to compress a nine hour photo shoot into a three minute video is a tough task! This is a very rough cut. Ironically I was editing it for a while with no sound and then I heard “Comic Book Whore” by Jane Jensen on Pandora. It was exactly the pace and sound I wanted for this. Waiting to hear back if I can even use the music in the final cut. This version is rough and just for fun.
Oh and just to be clear, the model, Nicole, is not an actual comic book whore to my knowledge. I’m guessing that’s someone who is really, really into comic books.
Anyway, one more note. Editing video is a pain in the ass! I guess it probably gets better with time. But wow. Editing three minutes of video (even roughly) takes days!
