working with dogs on photo shoots

black lab puppy and model outdoors

model and black lab puppy in urban environment

Some dogs go hunting. This dog goes on photo shoots. Working with animals on shoots is tough! They don’t exactly follow direction well and they like to do mischievous things. Having a dedicated handler for the animal on set is ideal.

Hauled this black lab around with me all day today and only got about two decent photos of him with the model. Not for lack of trying though!

casual swimwear/fashion shoot

model in yellow sweater, bikini top, and jean shorts sitting on front steps of beach house

One more photo of this stunning model to share today. There are so many great images from this shoot it’s going to be tough to edit them down into a series of six or seven images. This was one of my most productive shoots to date! And I have a new strategy for future shoots. Sometimes just walking around and shooting when stuff catches your eye is the way to go. The pink door on this beach cabin (and hint of yellow flowers out front) totally caught my eye and the natural light was perfect for this shot. Quick, easy, and effective.

great day today

model in skirt and bikini top with shirt over it

Shot with an amazing model today in beautiful downtown Rockaway Beach. We covered a lot of photos and looks in just a few hours. Enough for a cool fashion swimwear series.

One of Rockaways finest even stopped by. To make sure everything was okay. I asked the cop if he wanted to hold the reflector but he ignored me. He was sweating a lot which was strange because it wasn’t very hot at all. I was glad he didn’t have a heart attack in front of us.

model in blue dress against green ivy background

I really do need to develop the patience to post my photos as series instead of individual posts. Anyone else struggle with that? I always want to show off my work and don’t want to wait until I’m done with the series. Checking out social media sites makes that worse too. I see other photographers work and I’m all, “Hey, I have new work too!” so I go and post something.

model in blue jumper in front of truck

Sometimes you just get lucky. Stepped out onto the street with this model during a shoot and a graffiti covered delivery truck was parked out front. Snapped a couple pics and we were done long before the driver returned.

inspiration comes in many forms

model with long dark hair posing against wall

Listening to Pandora during a shoot today and a Jessica Simpson song came on. I glanced at the computer screen and saw the album cover and was inspired to try a similar pose with my model. Five shots later, we nailed our own version of that photo.

Shot this fashion photo story last month and finally had a chance to retouch everything and get them posted. Tried to use a couple of retouching tricks from the workshop this past weekend but everything was already pretty soft since I shot at wide open apertures and used just natural light.

Let me know what you think in the comments. Good, bad, somewhere in the middle? I can handle it.

blonde model headshot on a rooftop

We shot on a rooftop as part or a workshop put on by Quavondo | Photographer today. It was a strobe workshop so I decided to shoot wide open natural light to get something unique. No reflector.

Here’s Quavondo at work. He definitely has style.

irony of ironies

screengrab of wedding blog

Talk about ironic – just found one of my photos on the picture perfect wedding blog. The irony is that these days I’ll take a photo booth wedding job anytime over an actual wedding shoot and that’s no joke. I’ll also probably get bride and groom pics that you would kill for. That’s the magic of photo booth. People totally let down their guard.

Anyway, nice to know my work is decent enough to be featured on a wedding photography blog. Now if I could only figure out a way to pay for groceries with that photo credit.
