hot lights for still photography

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

I’ve been experimenting lately with my poor-man-hot-lights (the halogen modeling lamps from my strobes) for indoor lighting. Mixed with ambient light, the effects are more subtle than strobe. The bed shot of Lindsey in yesterday’s post was shot this way.

Did a little meter test today that I’m sharing because other photographers might find it useful. I compared a Paul C Buff (PCP) Zeus head connected to a Z2500 powerpack, a White Lighting (WL) 1600 monohead, and a PCB ringflash connected to the Z2500 powerpack. All have halogen modeling lamps that were turned to full power.

I metered everything at ISO 100, 1/50th second, five feet from the lights. Here’s what I found:

  • WL 1600 with bare reflector metered @ f1.3
  • Zeus head with bare reflector metered @ f1.4
  • Ringflash with diffuser on metered @ f1.8
  • Ringflash with no diffuser (bare reflector) metered @ f1.8
  •
Still not very powerful compared to “real” hot light. But interesting to note there’s almost a full f-stop difference between the WL and the ringflash. The ringflash with the diffuser seems to provide a broader and more diffused light than the bare reflectors though. I’m hoping to experiment more weekend and will share results when I have ‘em.

There are many different ways to shoot so called boudoir or glamour photos. Here’s one style shot with existing light (well, a bare modeling lamp for some fill) and f2.8 and high iso (800-1000).

One area I’ve noticed where digital still struggles a bit over film is with red colors in significant amounts. In digital, the reds often burn out and seem overexposed, especially if you’re going for a brightly lit image like this. I’ve actually darkened this dress with a saturation layer.

Background right behind the model looks is foam core and foam core providing the fill light to her right too (camera left). I love that look but feel like I’m starting to shoot too many similar shots next to these studio windows lately. It can be a tricky thing in a studio to push yourself beyond the same tried and true shots over and over.

Another photograph from among hundreds shot this past weekend. Lighting here is a reflector held over a lamp!

One of my favs from today. Shot @ ISO 1000! We couldn’t get a strobes to look right so everything for the shoot was basically lit with ambient and/or the modeling lamp from a White Lighting.

Super fast edit (still needs retouching) of one of my fav photos from today. Took forever to figure out the best lighting here but finally settled on an octa as key, gridded strip dome as rim light, and a softbox on the background. I may crop the final a lot tighter but also like this version.

This is one of my favs from the big latex fashion photo shoot last Sunday in Portland. Just today finally have time to sort these out properly!

Refining my technique with natural light– this one shot in studio with foam core on one side and a white reflector on the other. Background is a window.

Completely different direction from the photo shoot Sunday. In this town (Portland), you have to have a lot of versatility to make it as a photographer! Lighting here is a rim light on the model, a gridded spot on the background, and an octabox as key.

I can’t wait until the weather is nice enough to shoot swimwear outdoors again! Even with a fabulous model like Kristina, there’s only so much you can do in studio.

Incidentally, the original pic has a solid white background with RGB values of 255 straight out of the camera. I ran this version though Portrait Pro just for fun, and it dropped the RGB value on the background to 254. A subtle change but something to keep in mind if you use after-market software like Portrait Pro. It’s similar to a warming filter.
